The efficacy of Vitamin D oral sprays was a subject of research conducted at the Institute of Nutrition. This study served as the introduction to a three-year applied research project titled “Challenges in Achieving Adequate Vitamin D Status”, co-funded by the Public Agency for Research Activities and the Ministry of Health.

The study aimed to evaluate whether daily supplementation with 25 µg (1000 IU) vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in the form of oral sprays contributes to a sufficient increase in blood vitamin D levels.

The study took place during winter (January–March 2019) with 235 healthy participants who were initially insufficiently supplied with vitamin D (12–20 µg/L). Severe deficiency was observed in 21% of participants, who were advised to begin supplementation immediately. The control group received no supplementation, while the test group received 25 µg (1000 IU) vitamin D daily, equivalent to 500% of the legislated recommended daily intake.

Results

Supplementation resulted in a significant and statistically meaningful increase in plasma vitamin D levels:

Plasma concentration rose from 16±1 µg/L to 26±1 µg/L (N=26).
88% of participants reached a plasma concentration of at least 20 µg/L after 8 weeks, and 26% exceeded 30 µg/L.
Some individuals may require more than 1000 IU daily to achieve optimal vitamin D status.
